Abstract

418,467. Coated fabrics. McKAY, R. F., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham.-(International Latex Processes, Ltd. ; 10, Lefebvre Street, St. Peter's Port, Guernsey.) Nov. 6, 1933, No. 30751. [Class 140.] Patterned sheet material suitable for floor coverings, automobile toppings, artificial leather &c. is made by printing a design on one or both sides of raw pasteboard (boards of unsized, felted, paper-making materials) with coloured solutions or aqueous dispersions of rubber or like material, and thereafter impregnating the sheet with a dispersion or solution of rubber &c. Chlorinated rubber, depolymerized rubber, polymerized butadienes or substituted butadienes may be used, and may be prevulcanized if desired. The design extends substantially through the sheet, and the penetration may be improved by adding wetting agents to the dispersions &c. The sheet may be compressed after impregnation. Before or after printing, the back of the sheet may be coated with linseed oil paint, rubber cement, rubber latex, or with sponge rubber by applying a foamed latex or a rubber composition containing a volatile salt such as ammonium carbonate. The face of the material may be coated with a solution or aqueous dispersion of cellulose ester, lacquer rubber &c. Such coated material may be embossed, and the surface coating hardened, e.g. rubber may be treated with bromine or bromine and sulphur chloride.
