EON,
frtoon covnnrrret application area fra it, met. ae ia nateaata To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WARREN E. Summer, a citizen of the United fitates, residing at East Wal ole, in the county of Norfolk and State of assachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to floor coverings and has reference more particularly to coverings of the type set-forth and claimed in Letters Patent No. 1,131,317, granted to me under date of March 9th, 191.5."
produce a covering wherein the baclm'ng coating or under surfacing thereof 1s of a more durable character than that heretofore employed, with the result that it'will not pulverize, and as a consequence does not dust off. Again, the backing composition is such that it does not tend to mask the pigment which may beemployed to produce the desired color. A section of the floor covering is illustrated in the annexed drawing,-the various coatings being shown on a somewhat enlarged scale so as to clearly deplct the same;
s in the structure set forth in the aforesaid patent it is designed to have the body proper produced from a waterproofed material, such, for instance, as felt, impregnated with a suitable asphalt. is denoted by 1 in the drawing and has imposed thereon any suitable wear resisting surface, as, for instance, a coating 2 o' paint and, if desired a printed pattern or design surface 3. The undercoating or backing denoted by 41: is composed of the following ingredients in approximately the following pro ortions:
38 lbs. of ontan Wan I 57 of hardened rosin-paraffin 5 of 135 paraflin, and a suitable pigment, say 11 lbs. of red oxide ground in oil, dwhere a red tone, for instance, is desire birch bod y Preferably the hardened rosin paraffin is produced by heating the rosin to a high temperature and before it solidifies blending sufficient paraffin therewith in order that the mixture thereby roduced may be melted over a steam bath. henso melted the re- .maining ingredients may be admixed therewlth,
The rosin may, however, be firsthardened in a kettle and the remainder of the inwgredients added thereto, but the method above outlined is preferred as it permits v greater convenience in blending. The object of the present invention is to Such admixture produces a' waxy compound which is found distinctly-advantageons over that wherein the Mcntan wax is predominant. As above noted the com pound does not mask the pi ment and,
1. As a new article of manufacture, floor,
coverin comprising a waterproofed flexible bo y. and an undercoa'ting containing hardened rosin and paraffin.
2. its a new article of manufacture, floor covering comprising a flexible body having an undercoating containing hardened rosin and parading the rosin being present in at least half of the amount of the mixture composing the coating.
3; As a new article of manufacture, floor covering comprising a flexible body having an undercoating containing hardened rosin paraffin, and Montan war, the rosin an wax being present in the mirturecomposmg the coating upwardly of at least 60%.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification. 5
