Abstract
Polyazo dyes having the general formula <FORM:0418455/IV/1> in which R = an aromatic residue (the same or different) which may be substituted, e.g. by halogen, alkyl, alkoxy and sulpho groups, but contains no free hydroxy or amino groups and in which R1 and/or R4 may carry additional azo groups are made by condensing a terephthaloyl halide (1 mol.) with the corresponding amino polyazo compound (2 mols.) in presence of a suitable condensing agent. They dye cotton, wool, silk and regenerated cellulose in orange to brown shades fast to washing and light. In examples: (1) the dyestuff 2-naphthylamine-6 : 8-disulphonic acid --> o -methylaniline sulpho acid (hydrolyzed) --> m-toluidine (2 p mols.) is condensed with terephthaloyl chloride; (2) the dyestuff sulphanilic acid --> 1 : 6- or 1 : 7-Cleve's acid --> m-toluidine (2 mols.) is condensed as in (1); (3) the aminodisazo compound in (1) (1 mol.) and the aminodisazo compound in (2) (1 mol.) are condensed with terephthaloyl chloride (1 mol); the proportion of the aminodisazo dyes may be varied. The trisazo dye aminoazobenzene disulphonic acid --> m-toluidine --> m-toluidine is also specified as a starting material as well as chloro-terephthaloyl chloride. Specification 326,791, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
