Abstract
Chemical reactions between liquids and elastic fluids at pressures of 100 atmospheres or more are effected by passing the reactants through a tube of diameter not exceeding 2 inches, the rate of flow of one or both of the reactants being such as to produce turbulent flow of the mixture. The invention is particularly applicable to hydrogenation process. According to an example, a tar oil distilled from low-temperature tar by the method described in Specification 387,459 is passed together with hydrogen, at 200 atmospheres and 505 DEG C., through a coil of tube \ba1/4\be inch in diameter. The rate of flow of oil is 1520 cc. per hour and that of hydrogen (corrected to atmospheric temperature and pressure) is 671 cu. ft. per hour.
