Abstract

418,126. Roller bearings. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO., Denber Avenue, Canton, Ohio, U.S.A. June 18, 1934, No. 17938. Convention date, Jan. 17. [Class 12 (i).] A roller bearing comprises two sets of conical rollers 4 separated by one or two sets of cylindrical rollers 6, a one-piece inner bearing member 1 having conical races 2 at its ends and one or two intermediate cylindrical races 3, and an outer bearing member in three parts including a split member 9 for the cylindrical rollers and cups 11 with conical bores 12 fitting over reversely coned outer surfaces 13 of the member 9. The split in the member 9 is oblique and preferably located in an unloaded or lightly loaded part of the bearing. Thrust ribs 8 for both conical and cylindrical rollers are formed on the inner bearing member 1. A modification has the retaining ribs for the cylindrical rollers formed on the member 9, and, in a further modification, there are no ribs on the member 1 and loosely fitting thrust rings are positioned between the ends of the conical rollers and the end surfaces of the split member 9. Wear in the conical roller bearings is taken up by pressing the cups 11 towards one another, this also taking up wear in the cylindrical roller bearing by compressing the split member 9.
