418,098. Typewriters &c. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.- (Underwood Elliott Fisher Co. ; 342, Madison Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 7, 1934, No. 4007. [Class 100 (iv).] Paper carriages and supports; carriagereleasing arrangements; carriage-returning mechanism.-A work-carrier is movable in line-spacing and colunm-spacing directions and is held in selected line and column positions by separate mechanisms, means being provided for simultaneously releasing the holding-mechanisms. The work-carrier may be urged towards initial position by means of a spring drum or other motor. In the construction shown in the Figure, framework 1 supports typing- mechanism and a short bar-platen 10. A sheetsupport 20, consisting of thin material such as rubberized fabric, is arranged above the platen and is secured to a frame 15 which runs for line-spacing on a frame 14 running for columnspacing on a stationary frame 13. The frames 14, 15 are urged towards initial position by means of a spring drum 29 on the framework, a cord 31 connected to the drum being guided by rollers 32 on the frame 14 and being connected to the frame 15. Movement of the frames 14, 15 is normally prevented by means of a dogs which co-operate with racks 42, 38 and are connected to a common releasing-lever 43. On release of the dogs, the frames 14, 15 are returned to initial position and are arrested by a stop 27 on the frame 13 and a stop on the frame 15. Sheet clamping arrangements.-Clamping- fingers 22, Fig. 2, are carried by a spring-urged shaft 23 mounted on a bar 21 on the frame 15. The clamping-fingers are releasable by means of a thumb-lever 25 provided with a latch 26. Line-spacing mechanism; column-printing arrangements.-To line-space the frame 15, the operator places his finger in any one of a series of numbered holes 35 in a plate 33 on the frame, and moves the frame until his finger comes into contact with a stop 34. To column-space the frames 14, the operator places his finger in any one of a series of numbered holes 39 on the frame 13, and moves the frame 14 until a stop 40 thereon engages his finger.
