Abstract

28,122. Longini, H. E. Dec. 10. Typewriters. - Relates to a machine for writing in small or large characters, which is adapted for making placards, bills, showcards, &c., and for writing in books or on bales, boxes, &c. The machine comprises a carriage travelling on a frame, and having printing- characters which can be depressed by means of a plunger. The frame 1, which is placed on the surface to be written on, consists of a plate on which run rollers 3, 5 on a carriage 4. A plunger 15, capable of sliding vertically on the carriage, supports a spindle 18 to one end of which is secured . a wheel 19. A rubber band provided with printing- characters passes round the wheel 19 and is secured thereto at its ends. At the bottom of the wheel, the band passes below a plate 24 carried by the plunger 15. The characters may be formed directly on the wheel 19. The wheel is rotated by means of a milled head 22. An index-wheel 21, co-operating with a pointer 25, shows which character is in position beneath the plate 24. When the plunger 15 is depressed, a toothed wheel 20 engages with a fixed stop 28 and locks the wheel 19. The carriage 4 is advanced for letter-spacing by a spring drum 6, its motion being controlled by a rack 9 carried by a spindle 10 which is journaled in endpieces on the frame 1. The rack is engaged by a fixed dog 29 and a movable dog 30. The dog 30 is pivoted to the plunger 15, and its motion in one direction is limited by an incline 33, Fig. 7, which engages with an incline on the fixed dog 29. The motion of the dog 30 is limited to one or two letter-spaces by means of a lever 41. The rack 9 may be rocked so as to release the carriage by means of an arm on the spindle 10. Line-spacing is effected by moving the frame 1 so as to bring holes 38, Fig. 9, successively into engagement with pins 37 on a frame 36. The types are inked by a pair of rollers which are carried by spring-pressed arms pivoted to the carriage 4.
