417,279. Friction gearing. DELL, C., 25, Swing Gate Lane, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and READ, H. L., Netherton, Herington Grove, Hutton Mount, Essex. Sept. 13, 1933, No. 25363. [Class 80 (i).] In an epicyclic friction gear of the kind having an annulus 2 formed with a conical, spherical, or spheroidal bearing surface for engagement by the planetary rollers 4, the pressure on which is thus applied or relieved by axial adjustment of the annulus in an outer casing 3, the casing is provided with several slots or the like 8 through which pass a series of pins 7 fixed to and radiating from the annulus or from a ring 9 rotatable on the exterior of the casing to adjust the position of the annulus axially. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to the sections 2, 2<a> of a duplex annulus, both having pins 7 passing through longitudinal slots 8 for engagement by rings 9 screwed on the casing 3. The rollers 4 are carried by a spider 5 and engage a sun wheel 6 in the usual way. In a modification, the ring 9 instead of moving axially has a series of cam-like teeth on the edge engaging the pins, the other edge engaging a fixed collar or another set of pins fixed on the casing. In a further modification, the pins which move the annulus are fixed to the outer ring and pass through circumferential slots in the casing into curved or inclined grooves in the annulus, the rotation of which relative to the casing is prevented by other pins engaging longitudinal slots in the casing. The adjusting rings may be locked by set screws.
