[Class 28 (i).] In apparatus for cooking wafers, waffles, and the like, of the kind in which opposed electrically heated plates are used, temperature control means are provided in each plate. The heaters may be arranged in series or in parallel. Fig. 4 shows a series arrangement and Fig. 3 shows the arrangement of the heat-sensitive device in each plate. A bi-metallic strip 10 is anchored to a fixed post 11 and has contact studs 12, 13 which make contact either with a contact 14 or a contact 16, the latter being carried on a springy strip 17 in electrical connection with a terminal 18. A lever 21 enables the device to be used as a simple thermal switch or as a change-over switch. The strip 10 is adjusted and controlled by a nut 20. The current passes from the post 11 to the terminal 15 or to the terminal 18. The heating-means in the upper plate comprises elements 4, 4<a> and in the bottom plate comprises elements 5, 5a. According to the operation of the thermostats, one or both of the elements in each iron may be functioning or both elements may be cut out in one iron whilst both are functioning in the other. The current is supplied to the heaters from terminals 7, 8, Fig. 2. At the front of the top plate 2 is pivotally connected a locking-lever 22 having a hook-shaped part 22b which engages under a roller 23 to lock the plates together. The roller is carried on a plate 24 pivoted at one end at 24<a> and having a screw 25 at the other end for adjusting the plate. The plate is formed with a slot 24b in which a bush 26 is slidable, and a screw 27, passing through the bush, is tightened to lock the plate 24 in its adjusted position.
