[Class 45.] in a bale-strapping machine wherein at the tensioning end two grippers are provided, one comparatively stationary and serving to prevent reverse movement of the strap whilst permitting movement thereof in the tensioning direction, and the other, which is manually oscillated, gripping and tensioning the strap when swinging in one direction and passing freely over the strap when swinging in the other direction to obtain a fresh purchase, the oscillating gripper comprises an anvil 17, Fig. 1, extending forwardly from the lower end of an arm 16 on a bush 22, Fig. 6, rotatable within apertures in bearing plates 2, 2<1> and biassed in an anticlockwise direction by a spring 25. A handle 27 is secured to a shaft 4 rotatable within the bush and a plate 18, Fig. 1, is secured to the front end of the shaft. A pawl 20 is pivoted on the plate 18 eccentrically of the shaft 4 and is provided with a shoulder 21 which is shaped as shown to engage the under edge of the plate 18 but allowing a limited swinging movement of the pawl in either direction. Movement of the anvil is limited by stops 23, 24. The comparatively stationary gripper comprises a pawl 9 secured to a shaft 5 and coacting with a foot 8, being biassed in an anticlockwise direction to gripping position by a spring 15, Fig. 6. The shaft 5 is provided with a collar 11 having a tangential projection 12 which when the lever 27 is swung into full vertical position (which is higher than the normal limit of its motion during the straining operation) is engaged by a lug 30 on the lever 27 so that both pawls are released from gripping engagement with the strap. The free end of the strap is held by a gripper 35, Fig. 1, and, after tensioning, the strap may be cut and secured by the mechanism indicated at 40 which may be that described in Specification 383,401.
