Abstract
392,959. Wiring bales &c. CLARK, R. FULLER-, 1, Warwick Road, Thorpe Bay, Essex, and ROBERTS, J. M., Leysfield Road Works, Shepherd's Bush, London. Nov. 27, 1931, No. 32891. [Class 45.] One end of the wire is clamped between a cam gripper 24, Fig. 2, and a stationary anvil 23, the wire is then passed through a pair of axially-aligned spaced slotted pinions, 61, 6 and slotted trunnions 5<1>, 5 around the bale or box, again through the slots in the pinions and trunnions, and its other end is passed between a pair of discs 22, 23, Fig. 1, the disc 22 being rigid on a shaft 18 and the disc 23 being rotatably mounted thereon and provided with a milled edge. To tension the wire the shaft 18 is rotated by oscillating a lever 15, which is slidably mounted on a parallel shaft 11, so that clutch teeth on its hub 151 engage clutch teeth on the hub 141 of a sprocket wheel 14 which drives the shaft 18. Reverse movement of the shaft 18 is prevented by means of a pawl 21 which engages ratchet teeth 20 on the disc 22. The reaction of the wire draws the disc 23 into closer gripping engagement with the disc 22. After the wire has been tensioned a clamp 26, Fig. 2, is depressed against a spring 26<2> by means of a cam lever 26<5> so that its lower end 261 engages and clamps the central portion of the overlapping wires between the pinions. The lever 15 is now moved along the shaft 11 and is swung counterclockwise so that a recess 15a, Fig. 1, therein engages an abutment 34 on a cranked lever 33 pivoted at 33<1>. The other end of the lever engages beneath the rear member of a U-shaped frame 28 to swing the latter about its pivots 28<1>, Fig. 2, against a spring, thereby depressing the front portions 28<2>, 283 thereof which are formed as cutters and coact with shearing plates 29, 30. After the wires have been cut the lever 15 is moved farther along the shaft 11 so that the clutch teeth at the other end of its hub 151 engage teeth 12, Fig. 1, on the hub of a bevel 10. A manually-operated locking-catch 13 is now released from a notch 10<1> in the bevel and the lever 15 is oscillated so as to rotate bevels 9, 9<1>, and hence the slotted pinions and trunnions, in opposite directions whereby a tie as shown in Fig. 7 is produced. In a modification, Fig. 4, separate cutters are employed, each being operated against its spring 39 by a pin 38 projecting from the gear wheel 7 driving the slotted pinion and trunnion, each gear wheel being provided with a pin and being mutilated as shown so that the slotted pinions and trunnions are not rotated until after the cutters have been operated. A modified operating lever 15, Fig. 8, is provided with pawls 35, 35<1> which engage peripheral ratchet teeth on the hubs of the bevel wheel 10 and sprocket wheel 14 respectively. Either or both pawls may be retracted by means of its appropriate lever 37, 37<1>.
