Abstract

Alloys to be further alloyed with deoxidized metals are deoxidized by intermixing the molten alloys violently with a molten very fluid slag having a high dissolving power with respect to the oxides contained in the alloy, the slag and alloy forming an emulsion by the violent intermixing. Ferrochromium and ferromanganese which may contain nickel or other metals, and other alloys of chromium and manganese, may be so treated before addition to steel or other metals. The intermixing may be obtained by pouring the metal in a thick jet from a height onto the molten slag contained in a ladle, or by introducing a non-oxidizing gas, or by using rocking or rotating receptacles. Deoxidation takes place in a very short time and without the application of heat being essential. The slag preferably should be acid and if it is desired to avoid the enrichment of the bath in silicon, should have a basis of titanium oxide or alumina instead of the usual silica. Specification 404,300 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the process may be carried out in a high or low frequency electric furnace producing agitation with a slag charged in solid or molten condition. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
