Abstract

Articles of or containing rubber such as play balls, are coloured to a substantial depth of surface by a process which comprises first halogenating the rubber surface, and then staining it with an organic dye in solution in water or in an organic solvent. The halogenation of the surface is preferably carried out as described in Specifications 403,726, 410,436, or 415,195. The halogen may be employed in gas or liquid form, or in solution in a solvent. The surface is preferably pre-treated with an organic solvent or with water to increase the uniformity of condition in readiness for the application of the halogen. Suitable dyes are: benzeneazo - betanaphthol, benzeneazobenzeneazo-betanaphthol and eosin.
