Abstract

<PICT:0415046/IV/1> <PICT:0415046/IV/2> <PICT:0415046/IV/3> In apparatus for spinning artificial silk threads or filaments by the evaporative or dry spinning process having a spinning cell adapted to be heated and provided with an outlet having in association closing means adapted to render the said outlet substantially fluid-tight, the filaments pass from the spinning cell through the said outlet into a winding chamber in which they are wound. A plurality of spinning cells 1 are built in pairs of batteries each of about 50 cells back to back with a platform 2 between each pair forming the ceiling of an enclosed alleyway between the rows of cells. A winding chamber 3 provided with a partly glazed slidable counter-balanced door 5 adjoins the front of each spinning cell. Rails 6 in these chambers above the winding mechanism 4 serve to store wound bobbins 7. The filaments pass from the spinning cell through a substantially fluid-tight outlet to the winding chamber, so that as solvent-laden air is sucked from the spinning cell through the bee-hive shaped chamber 9 and piping 18 to the recovery plant, air from the winding chamber 3, entering at or near the base, and laden with solvent from the bobbins 7, passes via the pipe 8 through the unit 10 for heating the spinning cell, into the upper part of the spinning cell. The substantially fluid-tight outlet for the spinning cell comprises a rectangular slot fitted with a rotatable bright metal rod 11 having circular end sections and a semi-cylindrical intermediate portion. The rod is loaded by a spring 12 so that the opening is normally closed as shown in Fig. 3, the filaments 17 passing through the small notch 16 in the packing plate 15. A treadle 13 projecting at the base of the winding chamber 3 permits the closure member to be brought to the open portion shown in Fig. 2.
