Abstract
A water resistant thermoplastic composition is obtained by the admixture of a polyvinyl resin and the exudations from plants of the species Xanthorrhaea, commonly known as acaroid gum, or yacca gum. The addition of the natural resin has the effect of stiffening the polyvinyl resin at temperatures slightly above atmospheric in addition to improving the resistance to moisture to about the same extent as copal resin, without lowering the softening point. The admixture may be effected on the mixing rolls or in solution in a common solvent such as butyl or ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol or acetone. The yacca gum may be used in its natural state or it may be first purified by steam distillation and filtration, or by solution in alkali, filtration, and precipitation by acid. In examples yacca gum is admixed with polyvinyl acetate and with polyvinyl resins prepared according to Specification 351,082, [Group IV], or by aldehyde condensation of 70 per cent hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate of 15 centipoises viscosity. The mixed resin can also be mixed with further resinous admixtures such as carnauba wax, dyestuffs, fillers such as sawdust, sulphite wood and limestone, fibres, pigments and abrasives.
