Abstract

414,412. Pit-props. NYBORG, T. G., and HIGGINS, M. F., Meco Works, Worcester. Feb. 3, 1933, No. 3343. [Class 20 (ii).] A telescopic pit-prop of the type in which an upper member is adjusted on a lower section bar member by means of a transverse wedge traversing the web of the section-bar has the upper member 7 formed with depending legs 6 which straddle the web 3 of the lower member, the flanges of which are bent around at 2 to enclose the legs. The upper member is connected by pin and slot 9 and 11 to the lower member, the top edge of which is inclined to coact with the wedge 12. The upper member may comprise a flat bar 7 with a strip of metal bent into the form of a U welded to it to form the legs, or may be formed of a T-bar with legs riveted to the flange. The angle of the wedge may be such that the wedge tends to come out under pressure, in which case a locking bar 15 embracing the top of the lower member, the upper member, and one end of the wedge is used to retain the wedge in position. To increase the range of adjustment, the wedge may be formed with stepped surfaces.
