Abstract

414,358. Winding-machines ; stopmotions. NASMITH, F., and COTTAM, H., c/o Universal Winding Co., Saville Street, Oxford Road, Manchester. Jan. 31, 1933, No. 3018. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii).] A machine for winding wire coils comprises the combination of a gearcasing, a winding spindle journalled therein, a clutch contained therein for coupling the winding spindle to its drive, and mechanism for releasing the clutch when a predetermined number of turns have been wound, actuated by a visible revolution counter and indicator positively driven from the winding spindle. The revolution counter and indicator may comprise zeroising means, and means for varying the setting at which the clutch releasing mechanism is operated. The clutch may also be released upon wire breakage, preferably by utilizing the usual tension compensator as a breakage feeler ; the feeler may be interconnected with a band brake for the supply bobbin so that upon breakage the supply is arrested. The winding heads may be in units, clutch-driven from a common driving- shaft extending through all the gear casings. The casing 10 contains a main driving shaft 16 which drives the winding spindle 18 through gears 19, 20 and a friction clutch 25 actuated by the arm 29 of a three-armed lever 29, 30, 31. The spring 32 attached to the arm 31 tends to move the three-armed lever to declutch the drive, but is prevented by the trigger arm 35 pivoted at 38 and having two laterally extending arms 44, 45. When a pre-determined number of turns have been wound, the arm 45 is displaced and the drive de-clutched, by means of the trip lever 65 of the revolution counter 51, the link 50, and lever 48 pivoted at 49. When the wire breaks or the supply fails, the arm 44 is displaced and the drive declutched as before, by the spring-loaded lever 73 and arm 74 moving upwardly and pulling the links 71, 70 to rotate the lever 46 pivoted at 69, the lower end of which engages the said arm 44. The spindle 18 carrying the threearmed lever 29, 30, 31 is manually operable, for re-starting purposes, by a handle 34. The revolution counter and indicator 51 of known construction is chain driven from a sprocket 59 on the winding spindle ; it is zeroised by the hand lever 66, and the setting at which the lever 65 is tripped is altered by means of thumb wheels disposed behind the cover 68. The wire passes from the supply spool 15, over a tension compensating pulley 91 to the traverse guide 23 and winding bobbin 61. The supply bobbin is connected to a band brake 84, 85, the braking of which is increased when a lever 73 and attached arm 74 are allowed to be moved upwardly by the spring 81 in the event of wire breakage. Specification 221,572, [Class 120 (ii)], is referred to.
