Abstract
Basic magnesium carbonate is obtained by adding carbon dioxide to an aqueous suspension of magnesium oxide or hydroxide containing ammonia in quantity substantially less than would be present if the ammonia and carbon dioxide were added as ammonium carbonate. The quantity of ammonia used is about 1,5 to 10 per cent by weight of the magnesium oxide or hydroxide. The suspension may contain 1 part magnesium oxide or hydroxide to 10--30 parts of water. It is preferably carbonated with agitation in a closed vessel, and the influx of carbon dioxide may be continuous and at such a rate that a pressure of one fifth of an atmosphere above atmospheric is attained. Alternatively, the carbon dioxide may be passed into the vessel until the above pressure is reached and the influx then discontinued until atmospheric pressure is attained. More carbon dioxide is then added, and so on. Carbonation is continued in both modifications until the mixture begins to thicken. After solidification, the mass is dried, preferably in a closed vessel for recovery of ammonia, and the dried mass may be cut into blocks or powdered. The apparent densities of the products of the continuous and intermittent carbonation processes are respectively 0,10--0,12 and 0,06--0,07.
