Abstract
The process of the parent Specification is modified by using as catalysts, in place of or in addition to the organic zinc or cadmium salts, organic nitrogenous bases, for example primary, secondary or tertiary alkylamines such as mono-, di- or tri-methylamine, methyl ethylamine, methyl propylamine, mono-, di- and tri-ethyl-, propyl-, butyl- and octyl-amines; alkylolamines such as ethanol-, propanol- and butanolamines; alkyl-alkylolamines such as mono-methyldiethanolamine; cycloalkylamines such as cyclohexylamine; di- and poly-amines such as pentamethylenediamine; aromatic amines such as aniline, N-methylaniline; naphthylamines ; and heterocyclic bases such as pyridine, piperidine and quinoline. The reaction is carried out at pressures between 2 and 25, preferably between 15 and 20, atmospheres and at temperatures between 100 and 300 DEG C., preferably between 180 and 240 DEG C. The organic bases may be present to the extent of 17 to 20 per cent by weight of the hydroxylated cyclic compounds.
