Abstract
Esters of secondary phenolic amines are prepared by removing the benzyl group by catalytic hydrogenation from a tertiary amine of the formula <FORM:0561570/IV/1> where R may be alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl; R1 may be acidyl or aroyl; R2 may be acyloxy, aroyloxy, alkoxy, methylenedioxy, alkyl, hydroxy, or hydrogen. n is a numeral from 2 to 4 and X is 1 or 2. Salts of the compounds so produced may be formed by the addition of an acid such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, maleic or succinic acids. In examples, the following compounds are subjected to catalytic hydrogenation using a palladium-charcoal catalyst: (1) 4-acetoxyphenethyl-benzyl-methylamine hydrochloride; (2) 3 : 4-diacetoxyphenethylbenzyl - methylamine; (3) 3 : 4 - di - benzyloxyphenethylbenzyl - methyl - amine; (4) 3 : 4 - diethylcarbonatophenethyl - benzyl - methylamine. The Specification contains a long list of compounds which may be prepared by the process of the invention.
