[Class 141.] A body-confining garment comprises an interconnected or endless body-encircling member having a portion formed of elastic material having elastic threads incorporated therein in such a way as to permit the material to stretch simultaneously both longitudinally and transversely of the body, the stretch in one direction, preferably the longitudinal direction, being easier than the stretch in the other direction. The garment shown comprises front, back, and side portions all formed of a knitted fabric comprising alternate elastic and inelastic threads 13, 14, respectively, the fabric being knitted, preferably, on a machine involving a needle bar shift. The side edges of the front and back portions are bound with tape extensible in a longitudinal direction, and the taped edges are joined together by stitching. The form of stitch used may be varied, e.g., lock stitches produced on machines involving a needle bed shift may be employed, or the knitted fabric may be formed from elastic thread alone, with a stitch involving a needle bar shift. The brassiere portion of the garment is formed of inelastic material. The garment may be worn beneath a bathing suit, as a dance belt, or may assume the form of a type of breeches or drawers having an upper body-confining portion.
