[Class 146 (iii).] Relates to pencil sharpeners of the block type and consists in the provision of means for limiting the advance of the pencil when the point is sufficiently sharpened. In the simplest form a transverse bore is made in the body of the sharpener into which the conical bore opens, the opposite wall acting as a stop for the lead. The transverse bore also acts to permit the discharge of shavings. In the form shown in Fig. 5, a split pin 7 is frictionally mounted in an aperture transverse to the conical opening for the pencil, and the two arms of the pin are cut to different lengths, the shorter one permitting the formation of a sharp point, while the longer one can be moved into position to close the end of the conical bore and cause a blunt point to be produced ; alternatively the pin may screw into the body of the sharpener. In the form shown in Fig. 9, knob 14 is rotatably mounted in the end of the sharpener, and the part 15 is formed with apertures of different depths to cause points of varying degrees of sharpness to be formed. The knob 14 is held in adjusted position by a spring-pressed pin 21 mounted in the body of the sharpener and engaging one of a series of notches in the face of the knob. Indicating marks are provided on the knob.
