Abstract
411,656. Road-traffic warning lamps. MACFARLANE, W., Saracen Foundry, Possilpark, Glasgow. April 27, 1933, No. 12247. [Class 75 (iv).] In a road-traffic warning lamp adapted to produce a light-and-dark effect both by daylight and at night, a lantern adapted to project light downwardly overhangs a post or support having on one or more sides a vertical column of outwardly and downwardly inclined light reflecting surfaces alternating with inwardly receding surfaces. In the form shown, a cast-iron circular lantern head 4 is fitted with a removable cover 8 which may be internally painted or polished to act as a reflector, electric lamp bulbs 6, lenses 5 for directing beams of light laterally, and reflectors 7 for projecting light downwardly through lenses or glazed panels 9. The post comprises a foot 14 formed integrally with a cast-iron square base 10, vertical webs 11 which curve upwardly and inwards, outwardly and downwardly inclined plane reflecting surfaces 12 which widen towards their front edges, and plane inwardly receding dark surfaces 13, each of which joins the lower edge of one surface 12 to the upper edge of the next lower surface 12. The lower surfaces are of larger area and more steeply inclined to the vertical than the upper surfaces. The surfaces 12 may be coloured white or yellow, the surfaces 13 may be coloured black, and the webs 11, which extend outwardly beyond the surfaces 12, 13, may be made reflecting.
