Abstract
411,387. Retractive switches; snapaction switches ; retarding action of switches; hydraulic springs. HAMILTON, W., Woodlands, Wadhurst, Sussex. Dec. 9, 1933, No. 34719. [Class 38 (v).] A quick-action retractive switch with a dashpot time delay device, comprises a switch arm 8 pivoted at 9 and provided with a member 10 for bridging a pair of contacts 11. The arm 8 is connected by a spring 12, which can act both as a tension or a compression spring, to an arm 1 of a bell crank lever pivoted at 3, the other arm 2 of which bears a pin 6, adapted to engage a ramp 7 on the switch arm 8. The cone 1 is shown in an intermediate position in which the spring 12 is not under tension. If the arm 1 is turned in a clockwise direction, the spring 12 is tensioned but the switch arm 8 is restrained until the pin 6 passes off the end of the ramp 7 to allow the switch arm to open rapidly. From this position, if the arm 1 is turned anti-clockwise the pin 6 rests under the ramp 7 and prevents the arm 8 from moving down under the compression of the spring 12 until the pin 6 passes off the right hand end of the ramp 7 and the switch closes rapidly. To enable the switch to be closed for certain intervals, a dashpot 13 is provided with a plunger 14 moving in a viscous liquid such as glycerine, the hollow plunger rod 15 being slotted at its upper end to receive the arm 1 which is connected to the plunger 14 by a compression spring 19. A powerful spring 20 is fixed on a stud 21 and has one arm 22 held by a pin 24. The other arm 23 engages a pawl 16 pivoted at 17 to the arm 1 to bias it and the arm 1 in a clockwise direction. When the handle 5 is sharply depressed the switch is closed as described, and the arm 1 is held by the engagement of the hooked end 25A of the pawl 16 under a fixed abutment 28. The plunger 14 then slowly moves down under the action of the spring 19 until a pin 18 or the forked rod 15 trips the pawl 16. The spring 20 then moves the arm 1 and the plunger slowly upwards to open the switch as described. In a modification the cone 2 is loosely coupled to the arm 1 so that the switch can be opened again quickly independently of the dashpot. Specification 395,801 is referred to.
