Abstract

A machine for marking roads and other surfaces particularly kerbstones, comprises a liquid carrying tank fixed on a main frame mounted on road wheels, and feed means for conveying the liquid (whiting or paint) to two rotary brushes, driven through gearing from a road wheel and which mark the horizontal and vertical surfaces (of a kerbstone) respectively. The main frame 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, 26 carrying the liquid containing tank 16, is extended at 22, 23 to house a handle 21, and carries bearings 27, 28, 32 for a cross-shaft 30. This shaft is driven by a road wheel 34 through gearing 42, 43, Fig. 4, enclosed in a rocker box 40 which may be adjusted about shaft 30 to regulate the height thereof by rotating a screw 50, Fig. 3, by a handle 51, a nut 49 on the screw being connected by a link 45 to a bar 47 <PICT:0410134/III/1> <PICT:0410134/III/2> <PICT:0410134/III/3> <PICT:0410134/III/4> means of a nut 97 connected by a link 95 to lever arm 56 and adjustable on a thread 98 by a handle 99. A further adjustment is provided for wheel 35 by mounting it on an arm 59 adjustably mounted on lever arm 58. Rigid with wheel 35 is a disc 65 for correctly positioning the machine with respect to the kerb 103. One marking brush 67 is mounted on shaft 30. The other brush 68 is mounted in a rocker box 70, adjustable about shaft 30 by means of a chain 74, and is driven through sprocket gearing 71, 72, 73 from this shaft, both brushes rotating in a direction opposite to that of the road wheels. Coaxial with brush 68 is a further road rigid with the box 40. Further road wheels 35, 36, adapted to rest on the kerb 103 are carried by a lever 56, 57, 58, pivoted about shaft 30 and adjustable with respect thereto by wheel 76 which determines the lowest position of the brush. Both brushes are readily removable, the brush 67 for example, being made in halves bolted together while the rocker box 70 is axially adjustable on shaft 30. The liquid is fed to the brushes through pipes 78, 79, the flow being controlled by a valve 82 operated through a crank 84 by a link 85. A liquid agitator 105 is oscillated by a crank 109 through a rod 108 and eccentric disc 110 on shaft 30. A tool box 112 may be provided, and a clutch, for example, a dog clutch, operable by the driver may be inserted between shaft 30 and the brushes.
