Abstract

532,767. Line-markers for roads &c. MAJOR. P. C. Sept. 14, 1939, Nos. 25811/39, 26502/39 and 10994/40. [Class 132 (ii)] An apparatus for marking lines on roads and other surfaces comprises a vehicle having driving mechanism for imparting a fore and aft painting movement to a brush, and serving to effect both the forward and return strokes of the brush. As shown in Fig. 1, a vehicle pushed by a handle 4 carries a paint container 8 supplying a pump 10 which intermittently delivers the paint through an outlet 82 to the brush 16. The brush is supported in a bracket 15 pivoted on a spindle 34 on the end of a swinging arm 9 which may be oscillated about the rear axle 3 thus lowering and raising the brush to mark a broken line. The oscillations are effected in the upward direction by a cam 14 and in the downward direction by gravity under the control of the cam co-operating with a catch 24. The downward movement is cushioned by a buffer and is limited by a ground roller depending from the swinging arm. As the vehicle moves forward a belt-driven crank 41 engaging a slotted arm 38 extending from the bracket 15 gives the brush a fore and aft oscillation relative to the chassis. At each contact with the road, and due to the rearward oscillation of the brush, the friction with the road tends to rotate the brush clockwise but this movement is prevented by a pawl and ratchet which, during the rearward oscillation of the brush, is caused by a toggle connection to rotate the brush in a counter-clockwise direction in order to convey the paint to the road. A striking pin 58 on the toggle brings into action a further pawl and ratchet to prevent reverse rotation of the brush during the return oscillation, this pawl then being thrown out of action by a further striking pin 57. When a continuous line is to be marked the swinging arm 9 is disconnected from its driving mechanism so as to remain permanently in its lower position. A height adjustment is provided to compensate for wear of the brush. When it is desired to paint a kerb, the bracket 15 and brush 16 are replaced by a bracket 215, Fig. 12, carrying two brushes 116, 216 arranged to paint the upper and side faces of the kerb, the vehicle being tilted so that the near side wheels run on the pavement and the off-side wheels on the road. The fore and aft movements and the intermittent rotational movements of the brushes are effected by the mechanism described above, and the brush 216 is driven from the brush 116 by a pin 122. Pump action. Each time the brush moves to its rearward position a rod 79 connected to the slotted link 38, and acting through a ratchet mechanism, screws down the pump piston and ejects the paint on to the brush, the ratchet mechanism being automatically disconnected to avoid damage when the piston ultimately reaches the bottom of its stroke, The pump may then be re-filled from the container 8 by manual return of the piston. Paint container. Stirrer blades within the paint container 8 are rotated by means of a belt 102 and a ratchet mechanism 108, the ratchet being provided in order to permit of manual rotation of the stirrer blades by means of a foldable handle 110 when the machine is stationary. The outlet from the paint container may be closed by a stop cock or by screwing down an internal valve operated by rotation of a hand wheel 115. According to the first Provisional Specification, two brushes applying different colours may be mounted in tandem and synchronized so that a continuous line composed of alternate lengths of two different colours is produced.
