ADJUSTABLE FLUSHING NOZZLE.
Application filed September 29, 1925. Serial No 59,428.
This invention relates to an improved adjustable nozzle, adapted principally for use in connection with motor vehicle street flushing apparatus, the primary object of this in vention being to provide a nozzle construction for this purpose, having a manually controlled, substantially universal mounting by means of which from the drivers seat of the vehicle the nozzle may be adjusted so as to direct the stream of water issuing therefrom over any desired area.
For a further understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a street flushing vehicle provided with the improved nozzle construction, comprising the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the control unit of the nozzle.
Figure 3 is a similar view taken through the nozzle itself and disclosing more particularly its universal mounting.
Figure 4 is a rear elevation of the nozzle and its mounting.
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the details of the invention, the numeral 1 designates a motor vehicle truck including a. frame 2, having-mounted thereon a tank or receptacle 3, for the reception of a suitable quantity of water.
Depending from one or more sides of the truck is a tank outlet pipe 4 which, in this instance, is supported by a bracket 5, secured to the frame 2. The lower end of the pipe 4 is formed with a. spherical enlargement 6 which fits within a correspondingly shaped socket 7 provided in a nozzle head 8. The head 8 is exteriorly threaded for the reception of a nut or cap 9, which in turn is provided with a spherical seat 10, arranged for engagement with the enlarged end 6 of the pipe 4 for the purpose of holding the head 8 supported upon the lower end of the pipe 4. By this construction it will be seen that the head 8 may be adjusted universally with respect to the stationary outlet pipe. In this instance the head 8 is provided with an interiorly threaded opening 11, in which is threaded one end of a distributing nozzle 12. In practice this nozzle is formed in two parts which are preferably welded together along the plane connected by the line 13. By thus forming the nozzle the inner surfaces thereof may be machined to the proper degree of smoothness requisite in securing a uniform diverging stream of water.
T 0 control the working positions of the nozzle and to adjust the same from a relatively remote position, the truck is provided, at a point adjacent the operators seat, with a vertically disposed tubular member 14, which is mounted for rotation in a bearing 15, carried in this instance by the floor board 16 of the vehicle.
The upper end of the tube 14 is slotted as at 17 for the reception of a pivoted lever 18 which has its larger arm pivotally connected as at 19 with the upper end of the vertically extending throw rod 20. The lower end of this rod is'provided with a ball shaped head 21 universally received within the forward end 22 of a pivoted beam 23 that is pivotally carried as at 24 upon a depending bracket 25 carried in connection with the frame of the vehicle. The rear end of the beam 23 is provided with a yoke 26 that is received within an annular groove 27, provided upon a sleeve 28 that is rotatably mounted upon and carried by the lower end of the pipe 4.
The sleeve 28 has fixed thereto a depending outwardly extending bracket 29 provided with a horizontal slot 30, and positioned within this slot is a segmental rod 31 that is carried by the head 8 of the nozzle.
It will be seen that by rocking the lever 18 in a vertical plane oscillating motion will be imparted to the beam 23, resulting in the raising and lowering of the sleeve 28, and since this sleeve is directly connected with the head 8, it follows that the latter will be adjusted in vertical planes upon the lower end of the pipe 4. Thus the nozzle may be raised or lowered so as to control the area of distribution of the water issuing from the tank 13.
In addition to the vertical adjustment of the nozzle about a substantially horizontal axis, the present invention provides an adjustment for revolving the nozzle about a vertical axis. This is accomplished by the provision of the rotatable tubular member 14. The lower end of the member beneath the floorboard has fixed thereto a sprocket 32, around which is trained an endless chain 33, the latter leading to a second sprocket 34 carried in connection with the upper end of the sleeve 28.
It will be seen that due to the slotted construction employed for providing a mounting for the lever 18, the latter may be grasped so as upon lateral movement the tubular member will be rotated axially. This results in rotating the sprocket 32 and with corresponding rotation on the part of the sprocket 3e and its associated sleeve 28, thereby rotating the nozzle about the vertical axis of the pipe 4 so that the outer end of said nozzle will be situated to direct a flushing stream over any desired area traversed by the truck.
In view of the foregoing, it will be seen that the present invention provides a simple, convenient controlling means for regulating the working positions of a distributing nozzle by a remote control means. The structure enables the operator of the vehicle to advantageously adjust the positions of the nozzle with out leaving his driving position, thereby overcoming the necessity hitherto present in prior structures of stopping the operation of the vehicle and adjusting the nozzle to meet the required conditions.
What is claimed is a 1. Fluid controlling means comprising an outlet conduit having a spherical enlargement provided upon the outlet end thereof, a nozzle provided with a spherical seat for the reception of said enlargement, means for retaining said nozzle in connection with said enlargement and to permit of substantially universal adjustment thereof with respect to the outlet end of said conduit, a rotatable sleeve mounted upon said conduit contiguous to said enlargement, coacting arms carried by said sleeve and said nozzle, there being pin and slot connections between the adjacent ends of said arms. means for rotating said sleeve to cause said nozzle to revolve in a horizontal plane, and means for reciprocating said sleeve to swing said nozzle vertically.
2. Fluid discharging means of the character set forth, comprising an outlet conduit having a spherical enlargement provided upon the outlet end thereof, a nozzle secured to said enlargement for universal adjustment,
a sleeve rotatably mounted on said conduit, a segmental frame secured to said nozzle, an arm carried by said sleeve and having a slot formed therein for the reception of said frame, and means for selectively rotating or reciprocating said sleeve to control the working positions of said nozzle. 7
3. In water distributing means, a discharg pipe having the discharge end of globular form, a nozzle including a socket adapted for the reception of the globular end of said pipe, a sleeve slidably and rotatably mounted on said pipe, link connections between said sleeve and said nozzle, means disposed remotely with respect to said nozzle for rotat ing said sleeve and means operated by said first named means for raising and lowering said sleeve relative to said pipe.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN W. COTTINGHAM.
