409,909. Metal-heating furnaces. SIEMENS - SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.- GES., Selmenstadt, Berlin. June 2, 1933, No. 16067. Convention date, April 20. [Class 51 (ii).] Cooling discharged materials.-Metal strip emerging from an annealing furnace is cooled by passage between fluid-cooled jaws 13, Fig. 3, which are yieldably pressed, by weights 21, against the strip 12 and are provided with lateral sealing means to prevent access of air to the edges of the strip. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the sealing means are constituted by asbestos strips 15 carried by members 14 which are mounted on levers 16 and pressed into contact with the sides of the jaws by a spring 17. The jaws are fitted with renewable contact plates 19 which may be formed with material-guiding recesses and with channels, preferably inclined to the direction of travel of the strip, to carry away any impurities from the surface thereof. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the lateral seals are provided by flanges 36 and co-operating troughs 35 containing sealing material, such as water, glycerine, oil, or fat. As shown in Fig. 7, the space between the end of the furnace and the face of the jaws 42, 43, is sealed by an asbestos plate 45 with which the jaws are pressed into contact by springs 44. An inert gas, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide, may be supplied under pressure to the furnace and to the space between the cooling jaws.
