Abstract

409,678. Cables. OKONITECALLENDER CABLE CO., Inc., Paterson, New Jersey, U.S.A. July 29, 1932, No. 21426. Convention date, July 29, 1931. [Class 36.] The oil in an oilfilled cable is maintained at a pressure of not less than five atmospheres. For this purpose the oil is supplied by a pump 7, Fig. 3, a pressure regulator 10 being provided. The paper insulation 2, Fig. 1, is wound round with a perforated metal tape 3 enclosed in a lead sheath 4 with grooves 4<1> on its inner face for the passage of the oil. The sheath 4 is reinforced by a winding 5 of metal tape enclosed in an outer sheath 6. Alternatively several insulated cores may be enclosed in a single conduit containing oil. To prevent oil from passing from one section of the cable to the next between the strands of the conductor stops 13 are formed in the conductor by filling the spaces between the strands with a fusible metal or other material. The spaces between the strands may be filled with asbestos dust or gypsum powder and a tape which will melt to form a continuous tube wrapped round the strands. Radiators 20, Fig. 6, may be connected to the cable at the joints, baffles 21 ensuring the passage of oil through them. Specifications 114,414, [Class 36], 342,243, and 376,632 are referred to.
