Abstract

409,560. Furnace walls. DAVEY, G. W., 21, Roxbury Street, Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Aug. 28, 1933, No. 23866. [Class 51 (i).] A furnace wall comprises a row of vertical columns 10, a series of vertically spaced horizontal beams 11 secured to the columns and refractory blocks 14 mounted on the beams which are provided with removable sections 23 between the columns in order to allow replacement of the blocks from the outside of the furnace. The removable sections are fastened to the fixed portions of the beams by means of splice plates 25. The beams are of channel section, the web being vertical and the two flanges sloping upwardly. The blocks are of substantially parallelogrammic form and have vertical inner and outer faces and upwardly and inwardly inclined top and bottom faces, the outer face having two vertically spaced grooves 15 sloping upwardly and inwardly and are supported by the engagement of the flanges of the beams in the grooves. The blocks are partly cut away between the grooves at 16 to allow a clearance for the web of the supporting beam. To prevent leakage, the blocks are formed with transverse grooves 27 in the upper and lower faces for the reception of asbestos packing 28. The inside face of the wall is protected by water tubes.
