Walls.-A wall construction for furnaces comprises a supporting frame, refractory blocks arranged in sections supported on the frame and retaining members for preventing inward displacement of the blocks, the blocks of any section being removable from the retaining members outwardly of the wall independently of superjacent sections. The invention is adapted particularly to furnaces having water tubes on the inside of the walls. The wall is built upon a framework of vertical beams 10, Figs. 2 and 3, to which are bolted horizontal block supports 12 of the form shown in Fig. 4, provided with an inner flange 12a. Anchoring members 19 of the form shown in Fig. 5 are hung upon the supports 12 by means of lugs 19<c>, a projecting portion of the web engaging beneath the flange 12a. The anchoring members engage, by means of flanges 19b with T-shaped recesses in the refractory blocks 16, 17 of each wall section, while the upper blocks 18 of each section are free to be moved outwardly to allow the blocks 16, 17 to be disengaged from the members 19 before their removal. Clearance is allowed between the overlapping adjacent blocks 17, 18 of superposed sections to permit expansion, the space provided being filled with material such as fireclay and asbestos. The refractory blocks are enclosed by slabs 21 of lagging material and metal plates. In the modification.shown in Fig. 7, the anchoring members 19<1> are carried by a steel bar 12<1> bolted to the beams 10 and are provided with a shelf 12x for supporting the refractories. Certain of the blocks 18 may be provided with anchoring means 24. The inner ends of the refractory blocks may be plain or recessed at the corners to engage with the water tubes.
