Abstract

305,010. American Engineering Co., (Assignees of Wheeler, E.). Jan. 28, 1928, [Convention date]. Addition to 297,094. Walls.-An improved furnace wall of the kind described in the parent Specification comprises a metal framework, constituting a portion of the furnace wall and arranged behind the protective lining, adapted to form a chamber by which access to the protective lining may be readily obtained for the purpose of renewing the metal blocks thereof. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the protective lining comprises vertical and inclined rows of blocks 27 of cast iron or other refractory aterial secured to rows of tubes 22 forming part of the water circulation system of a boiler by bolts 41, 42, and angle members 44. The upper and lower inclined rows of blocks are provided with surfaces adapted to engage with the horizontal courses of brickwork in the wall above and below. The framework behind the lining comprises upper and lower inclined channel beams 47, 48 connected to vertical supporting beams at their ends and by intermediate vertical I-beams 46. Cast iron blocks 67, 85 wedge shape in section are secured bv bolts to the channel beams 47, 48, as shown in Fig. 6, and these blocks engage with the brickwork above and below. In order to permit the protective lining to expand relatively to the frame behind, connection between the angle members 44 and channel beams 47, 48 is made, as shown in Fig. 5, by means of pins 93, 94 loosely engaging with apertures in the vertical angle members 44 and in brackets 103, 104, 109, 111 on the beams 47, 48. The connection between the protective lining and frame at the centre of their length is preferably made rigid so that the lining may expand from the centre towards the ends. The frame is enclosed on the outside by panels 125 removably secured to vertical angle members bolted to the channel beams.
