409,309. Well-drilling plant. NATIONAL SUPPLY CORPORATION, 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A. June 14, 1932, No. 16855. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1931. [Class 85.] A draw works for well-drilling plant may be transported as a unit and comprises a transmission assembly A, drum shaft assembly B, a frame assembly C, a cat-head shaft assembly D and a control assembly E arranged for ready connection. Variable-speed drive for rotary table.-The prime mover drives a sprocket 41 on a quill shaft 39 supported on a shaft 8 and formed with a pinion 44. A high speed drive is effected from the quill shaft through clutch 47, shaft 8, clutch 99 and sprocket 98. A low speed drive is effected through pinions 44, 51, clutch 54, shaft 9, pinions 53, 46, clutch 99 and sprocket 98. The sprocket 98 drives a double idler sprocket 100 on the drum shaft, the sprocket 100. driving the rotary table. Variable-speed drive to drum-shaft.-A low speed drive from the sprocket 41 to a shaft 10 is effected through pinions 44, 51, clutch 54, shaft 9, gears 53, 46, shaft 8, clutch 48, gears 45, 52, 56, 62 and clutch 65. A second speed drive is effected through pinions 44, 51, clutch 54, shaft 9, clutch 55, gears 56, 62 and clutch 65. A third-speed drive is effected through clutch 47, shaft 8, clutch 48, gears 45, 52, 56, 62 and clutch 65. A fourth speed drive is effected through clutch 47, gears 46, 53, clutch 55, gears 56, 62 and clutch 65. A high speed drive is effected through gears 44, 51, 61 and clutch 64. The shaft 10 drives the drum shaft 11 through gears 66, 67, 70 and a clutch 71. Cat-head drive.-The gear 51 drives a gear 113, Fig. 3, in a superposed housing 107. A cable passes from the driller through guides to a clutch lever 116 by which the gear 113 is connected to its shaft 110 to drive, through a chain, a shaft 101 carrying the cat-heads 106. Clutch-controls.-The pairs of clutches 47, 54 and 48, 55, are connected by arms 159, Fig. 4, so that only one clutch of a pair can be engaged at one time ; the clutches are operated through bell cranks 156, Fig. 7, rods 155, bell cranks 154 and rods 153 from levers 122, 123. The clutch 99 for the rotary table drive sprocket is controlled through a rod 134, Fig. 7, bell crank 133, rod 131, bell crank 130, and rod 129 from a pedal 119 provided with a latch to hold the clutch engaged. The clutches 64, 65 are controlledthrough rods 145, 146, and concentric shafts 90, 91, from pedals 120, 121. Each of the shafts 90, 91, has a depending arm with an adjustable screw whereby when either clutch 64, 65, is engaged a rocker 84, Figs. 3 and 5, is moved to act through links 83, 82 to open a valve 80 and admit fluid to a cylinder 77 containing a piston which acts through rod 76 to engage the clutch 71.
