409,259. Axle - boxes. SHEFFIELD, G. H., and SHEFFIELD & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., G. H., 38, Victoria Street, London. April 28, 1933, No. 4502/34. Divided on 407,754. [Class 12 (i).] An axle-box for rail vehicles comprises an outer frame of welded plates, bars or channels a, b and an inner tubular shell q for an antifriction bearing, supported in position by two or more diaphragm plates q<1> welded to the outer frame. The fixed box shown in Fig. 1 comprises a frame of four channel members, an inner plate e welded to the frame, an end cover f also welded to the frame, and semitubular struts or vertical ribs (not shown) welded outside the vertical channel members, serving as housings for the retaining bolts. Any suitable labyrinth device s may be welded to the plate e. The spring-supported box shown in Fig. 5 comprises top and bottom plates t, t<1>, side plates h, h<1>, and end plates, all welded together. Strengthening-bars v welded to the side and end plates also act as lateral checks for the spring beam forks (not shown) which carry the load on semi-circular bearings w. In both forms, further strengthening by means of transverse ribs i may be obtained.
