Abstract
408,996. Control of motors. FITZGERALD, A. S., 433, Warwick Road, Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Sept. 14, 1932, No. 25615. [Class 38 (iii).] Travelling to predetermined limits.-A motordriven escalator or like endless-band conveyer is automatically started up by a photo-electric control circuit, and is stopped by time delay means after it has travelled a distance sufficient to carry an object or person to a required point. The presence of a person at the entrance of an escalator interrupts a light beam, and a light-sensitive device 4 acts through an amplifier 18 to close a relay 16 which causes a relay 10 to close contact 19 immediately, and start the motor 5 driving the escalator. Provided the light beam is not again intercepted, the relay 10 falls, and, after a time determined by a timing device 13, closes contacts 20 to stop the motor. Instead of a time relay a condenser may be provided which is charged through an electron tube under the control of the device 4, and is allowed to discharge over a high resistance. The voltage of the condenser is applied to the grid of a further electron tube which feeds a relay for the motor starter.
