Abstract

[Also in Divisions F2 and G1] A speed-responsive switching circuit for controlling the brakes of rail vehicles comprises an A.C. generator 1, driven by the vehicle, the output of which is rectified at 3 and fed via a voltage-reducing circuit comprising a Zener diode 4 and potentiometer 5, to a further Zener diode 10 which determines the threshold voltage of a switching circuit, a contact 6 of which is shunted across the Zener diode 4. As described, when the speed is sufficient for negative half-cycles passing rectifier 3 to break down Zener diodes 4 and 10, transistor 12 becomes conductive, energizing relay 17 and applying a high braking level. Contact 6 of relay 17 by-passes Zener diode 4 so that relay 17 remains energized until the speed has become considerably reduced, when transistor 12 becomes non-conductive, releasing relay 17 and applying a low braking level. Reference is made to a known circuit in which the Zener diode 10 is switched between two tapping on the potentiometer 5.
