Abstract
408,852. Moulding and wrapping plastic substances. HILGERS, W., 246, Minister - strasse, Dusseldorf, Germany. Aug. 8, 1933, No. 22175. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1932. [Class 94 (i).] Plastic substances such as lard, butter, cheese, &c. are shaped and fed into a wrapping machine by a portion, for instance the base, of the shaping chamber. The material is fed from a trough 1, Fig. 2, by a worm 3 into a shaping chamber. The base of the chamber is formed by a plunger 9, the top by a slide 13 and the back by a wall perforated at 41 to allow the escape of air. When the chamber is filled, a slide 5 rises to separate the shaped portion, the slide 13 is withdrawn, and the plunger rises to the position shown to transfer the shaped block into a pocket 20 on a rotary turret 19. In its ascent, the block carries up a wrapper 23 which has been fed on to a grid 22, and the sides of the pocket cause the wrapper to be disposed about three sides of the block. The pocket has been moved bodily to the right, Fig. 2, into the receiving position by a control arm 25, a stop 36 causing the left hand side to open slightly to widen the pocket during the insertion of the block. The control arm moves to the left, and springs 26 carry the pocket in the same direction. During this movement, a stationary folder 27 turns up the depending flap 28 of the wrapper. A blade 32 on a swinging arm 29 turns up the flap 33. The turret makes a rotational step and the wrapping is completed in any suitable manner at stations c, d, e. In a modified construction of shaping chamber, Fig. 6, the back is formed by a plunger 41 which moves into the position shown, air being expelled through vents 44, and recedes as the shaping takes place, exerting suction on the plastic mass. The chamber may be disposed at right angles to the position shown. Apparatus for spraying the chamber with liquid between the shaping operations may be arranged to operate in timed relation therewith.
