[Class 59.] A ball mill for wet or dry grinding comprises a series of circumferentially-disposed perforated grinding-plates 6, for example, of chromium steel, and members 12 bolted to the rotating side-plates 3 of the mill and supporting sifting screens 15 through which the ground material passes to a dust-cover 18 and hopper 19, each member 12 having alternately disposed L- section pockets 17, Fig. 2, and apertures 16, the pockets on one member 12 being opposite the apertures on the preceding and following members, oversize material deposited in the pockets being returned to the mill, as the grinding-plates approach their highest position, through gaps 11 between the plates. Detachable liners 5 are secured to the side-plates 3. Uncrushed material is fed to the mill preferably automatically. Each screen 15 comprises a metal frame having a single panel or a plurality of interchangeable panels. The extraction of finely-ground material, such as is screened by 100 to 300 mesh, may be accomplished by aircurrents. The L-section pockets 17 may be apertured to permit a flow of water during wetgrinding.
