TO ALL WHOM I MAY CONCERN:
Be it lmown that I, JAMES B, FIELDS, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Pulverizer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification;
This invention relates to a new and improved device for crushing and pulverizing substances, reducing the same to an impalpable powder.
The invention consists of a rotating hollow cylinder, the inner surface of which is provided with a chilled east-iron or other hard surface for a crushing substance, said cylinder being provided with openings at its sides which are covered with screens, and having within it a rotary crusher or pulverizer, the periphery of which is also of chilled cast iron or other hard substance.
The crushing or pulverizing surfaces of the hollow cylinder and the crusher within it are of V form, and the former moves rather faster than the latter in order to obtain a grinding action, all being arranged as here inafter fully shown and described, whereby substances, however hard, such, for instance, as gold-bearing quartz, may be reduced or pulverized in a perfect manner. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. l l A represents a framing, which may be constructed in any proper manner to support the working parts of the machine, and B is a hollow cylinder, which may be of cast iron, and provided with hollow journals 0 C, cast with B and having their bearings upon friction-rollers D. One journal, 0, and a side, a, of the cylinder B, are cast separately from the main portion of the cylinder, and its otherjournal C and the side a secured to the main portion of the cylinder by bolts 6. The inner surface a of the body or periphery of the cylinder B is of chilled cast iron or other hard substance, which will resist wear as much as possible, and this surface a is secured within the cylinder in such a manner that it may be readily removed and replaced by a new surface when worn to such a degree as to afl'ect its efficiency. Both of the sides a a 0f the cylinder B are cast with holes d, which are covered with bolting-cloth, Wire gauze, or other suitable substance which will serve as a fine. screen. The inner surface of each side a a has a shield, E, attached, to form hoppers to receive the fine puivcrized portions of the substance operated upon, (see fig. 1.) F represents a shaft which has its hearings e in uprights f, attached to the framing, and on this shaft F, within the cylinder B, there is keyed a circular crusher, G, the periphery of which is of V-form or has a double-inclined surface, as shown at g, in fig. 1, and the inner'surface c of the cylinder B has a corresponding shape. The periphery of G is of chilled cast iron or I other hard substance, secured on the crusher in such a manner that it may, when worn by use, be readily detached and replaced by a new surface. H is a hopper from which the substance to be operated upon is dis-- charged into the hollowjournalC, and I is a toothed wheel, keyed upon the other journal C, and having a pinion, J, on the driving-shaft K, gearing into it. The shaft F of the crusher G also has a wheel, L, keyed upon it, into which-a pinion, M, on the driving-shaft K, gears. The gears I J L M are of such dimensions that the surface 0 of B will travel a little faster than the periphery of the crusher G. The ends of the hollow,
journals 0 C are covered by slides N N, and the cylinder B is covered by a case, 0.
The substance to be crushed or pulverizedis placed in the hopper H, and is discharged into the cylinder B through the hollow journal 0, and between the surface 0 of B and the periphery of the crusher G, and is reduced and pulverized between these surfaces, the pressure of G upon the substance being graduated as desired by screwing down springs P upon the bearings e e, as will be fully understood by referring to fig. 1. The dilference in the speed of the two surfaces 0 9 causes the substance to be subjected to a grinding action which renders them very efiicient. The fine pulverized particles pass by centrifugal force into the spaces or hoppers formed by the shields E, and pass through the screens over the holes d and out at the bottom of the case 0, as shown in red in fig. 1. By having the crushing and pulverizing surfaces cg div-form they are made to work parallel with each other and wear more evenly than if they were parallel horizontal surfaces. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The hollow rotating cylinder B, in combination with the crusher G, the latter being placed within the former, and having their crushing or pulverizing surfaces 0 9 moving with different speeds by themeens subste-ntially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The shields E, attached tothe inner surfaces of the sides a a of cylinder 13, in combination with the openings d in the sides of the cylinder B, covered with screens, and the crusher G, all arranged to operate in the manner as and for the purpose specified. I
