Abstract
In treating cotton and other textile yarns with an aqueous dispersion of rubber or like substance, such as gutta-percha or balata, the yarn is first wetted in a hot solution of an alkalimetal or ammonium soap and is then treated with the dispersion while only slightly twisted and not under tension. Preferably, a treatment with dilute ammonia solution is interposed between the preliminary wetting and the treatment with the dispersion. The yarn may be subjected to pressure after the preliminary wetting, the pressure being maintained until the yarn is immersed in the dispersion. The dispersion may be ordinary or concentrated latex, or a dispersion of vulcanized rubber, or a heat-sensitized dispersion such as is used in the methods of Specifications 284,608, 292,964, 330,520, and 335,621, [all in Class 70]. In the examples: (1) a number of parallel untwisted cotton rovings are wound on a rotating cylinder partly immersed in a boiling solution of Marseilles soap, and then on another cylinder rotating in aqueous ammonia; the rovings are then wound to form a hank, which is immersed loosely in rubber latex containing sulphur, di-o-tolylguanidine, and zinc oxide; the hank is then unwound in the latex bath, squeezed, and the rovings wound on a cylinder heated to about 80 DEG C., whereafter they are dusted with calcium carbonate and wound on a reel; (2) a single cotton yarn is treated as in example 1; (3) a four-yarn cotton strand is treated as in example 1.
