Abstract

Concentrated nitric acid is obtained from residual sulpho-nitric solution or dilute acid by the use of three treatment cylinders each having a rotating shaft carrying a number of discs which alternate with annular partitions in a surrounding casing to provide a zig-zag gas path, the shaft and at least some of both the discs and partitions being hollow to receive heating or cooling medium. The sulpho-nitric mixture and concentrated sulphuric acid are supplied to one cylinder and hot gases or liquids at 80--100 DEG C. circulate in the external casing and hollow shaft and discs. A second cylinder cooled by circulating refrigerant is used to condense the vapours evolved from the first and a third heated to a very high temperature serves to reconcentrate the sulphuric acid.
