[Class 88 (ii).] Pianofortes, harpsichords, xylophones, &c. have rigid deflectors such as the plates 3, 31 inclined to form a sound passage of increasing crosssectional area and closed at the sides at 2<a>, 2b by plates not shown. The inclination of the plate 31 may be reversed. A rotary vane 5 may be arranged in the exit opening to produce a tremolo. British Specification 103,355, [Class 88 (ii)], and German Specification 105,519 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the following constructions : (1) A grand piano with a cover underneath hinged to open downwards symmetrically with the usual lid opening upwards, and with a tremolo vane in each opening. (2) Auxiliary hammers, mounted on spring or felt strips, which may be caused to strike the strings &c. of a vertical or horizontal instrument through the agency of the main hammers, jacks, plectra or by hand, a celeste strip being interposable ; part of this matter is comprised in Specification 408,005. These constructions do not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 6850/85, 8636/88, and 11632/04, [all in Class 88].
