Abstract

381,210. Electrical musical instruments. MAcCULLUM, C. R. and MACCULLUM, A., 21, Gibson Street, Hillhead, Glasgow. July 1, 1931, No. 18955. [Class 88 (ii).] In an electrical musical instrument employing a photo-electric cell 9 and light-records of individual notes, on actuation of a shutter 5 by a key 1 a beam of light is caused by a slot 15 in a rotating cylinder 14 to traverse a stationary note-record on a film 10. Each note-record consists of a small patch having a density which varies in a vertical direction and relates to a few waves only. The height of a patch is the same as the distance between the slots 15 so that as a beam leaves at the lower edge of a patch, a fresh beam enters at the upper edge. The currents produced are passed through an amplifier 18 to a loudspeaker 19. The note records may be arranged on the film in rows representing the notes of an octave, and in columns representing the different octaves. The film may have noterecords relating to different instruments, the requisite part of the film being brought into position by e.g. a crank 20 on roll 11. By making each shutter 5 of graded transparency, the keys are given expressive touch. Lenses are provided to focus the beam.
