[Class 97 (i).] In frames of the kind in which each of the sides, in addition to having the usual hinge for folding purposes, is provided with pivotal adjustment about a substantially horizontal axis so that the inclination of the glasses can be varied, the last-montioned pivotal joint is in the form of a tapered plug and corresponding socket arranged to be moved axially into locked relationship. As applied to metallic frames having the usual split rim 10, Figs. 1 and 2, with lugs 12, 13 drawn together by a screw to secure the lens, the frame is provided adjacent the lug 13 with a conical projection 14 surrounded by a conically-bored sleeve 17 having rearward projections or cheniers 18, 19 between which a chenier 21 on the side 20 engages. The projection 15 is internally threaded to receive a screw 16 by which it can be locked within the sleeve 17 after the inclination of the glasses has been adjusted. When applied to non-metallic frames, the sleeve 17 may be formed integrally with a plate 23, Fig. 3, secured to the frame 24. The tapered plug passing into the sleeve carries one member of the ordinary hinge of the side 20, this hinge consisting of a leaf 26 having cheniers interengaging with cheniers 27 carried by the plug. The socket 17 serves as an abutment to limit the outward movement of the side. The axis of the hinge 27 may intersect the axis of symmetry of the plug. In another form, Fig. 6, the frame 24 has a rearward projection 34 which receives a tubular bush 35 having a tapered bore into which the plug 15 fits. The pivotal joint for the side 20 may consist of a plate formed at one end with a number of cheniers extending into the thickness of the plate, the latter being cut away between adjacent cheniers to accommodate the chenier or cheniers carried by the tapered member.
