407,733. Hair-waving appliances. McCONKIE, W. R., 24, Montgomery Street, and CADDIES, R. F., Chesterfield, both in Irvine, Ayrshire. April 18, 1933, No. 20177/32. [Class 131.] A mandrel for treating a wound tress of hair with gas or vapour comprises an inner perforated tube 1 and an outer perforated casing 2 rotatable relatively thereto to tighten the winding, the tube and casing being secured relatively to one another by a clutch comprising teeth 10, 12 formed respectively on a sleeve 9 secured to the tube 1 and on an enlargement on the casing 2, the teeth being held in engagement by a spring 13 bearing on the casing 2. The tube and casing may be made of stainless steel, aluminium or other alloy, synthetic resin, cellulose derivatives, vulcanized rubber or ebonite. In use, the gas or vapour, e.g. steam and/or air, oxygen, ozone, carbon dioxide, ammoniated steam, oil vapour or the vapour of a suitable chemical, may be supplied to the open end 3 of the tube 1 and pass outwards through the wound tress. The mandrel, with the tress wound thereon, may be inserted in an outer container, the gas or vapour being either supplied to the tube 1 and passing out through an outlet on the container, or being supplied to the container and passing out through the tube 1.
