- 407,569. Controlling pedals for motor vehicles. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and CANSDALE, J. H., 40, Murray Road, Rugby. May 27, 1933, No. 15377. [Classes 79 (v) and 136 (ii).] In a pedal-operated mechanism including a pivoted element 1 which is angularly displaced by a primary or bodily movement of a pedal 3, means are provided, actuated by a rocking movement of the pedal independent of the primary movement, for applying a variable retarding torque to the pivoted element 1 whereby a desired resistance to primary pedal movement may be set up. When the resistance is sufficiently increased the member 1 may be held locked in any position. In the construction shown the element or arm 1 is fixed on a shaft 2 actuating the controller of a motor vehicle. The pedal 3 is pivoted at 4 to the arm 1 and is connected by a link 5 and arm 7 to a cam shaft 8 operating brake blocks 9 which act on a fixed drum 10. The brake blocks are normally held off by a light spring 13 acting against a stop 12 on the arm 1. When the pedal 3 is depressed bodily or released the arm 1 moves freely, but if the lower part of the pedal is depressed by the driver's heel, the pedal rotates about the shaft 4 and the brake is applied, thus opposing to any desired extent movement of the arm 1 and finally locking it if sufficient pressure is applied to the lower end of the pedal.
