Abstract

In the liquid treatment of hats or like articles, the treatment liquid is caused to flow through a perforated stationary vessel containing the articles, and the positions of the inlet and outlet conduits of the liquid supplying means are caused to move so that the regions through which the liquid enters and leaves the vessel are displaced on the surface of the latter. Preferably the area of the surface of suction is large compared with the area of the surface of delivery. In Figs. 1 and 2, the articles to be treated are placed in the vessel 1 having a perforated bottom 3. Beneath the perforated bottom and in contact with it is a hollow piece 4 having a rectangular opening 5 at its upper surface. The lower portion of this hollow piece 4 contains a helico-centrifugal pump 8 which draws liquid through the circular lower opening 7 of the hollow piece, and discharges it out through the upper rectangular opening 5. The circular opening 7 is open to the conical portion 2 and thus in communication with the two approximately semi-circular portions abc and def, of the perforated bottom 3. The pump 8 is caused to rotate at a suitable high speed, while the hollow portion 4, attached to the hub 11 and the hollow hub 17, is caused to rotate more slowly by means of the worm wheel 18 and worm 20, and the further worm wheel 21 and worm 22. By this means the rectangular slot 5 is caused to rotate slowly on the perforated bottom 3, and by the action of pump 8, the treatment liquid is forced into the vessel 1 by way of the slot 5 and withdrawn through the two portions abc and def. The apparatus of Fig. 3 comprises a rectangular vessel 40 divided longitudinally by a wall 43 which does not reach the bottom. The portion of the vessel bounded by the walls 41 and 43 is provided with a perforated bottom 44. In the other portion of the vessel is fitted a pump 45 driven by a motor 46 supported on rods 50 and a screwed rod 55 so that the pump and motor <PICT:0407520/IV/1> may be moved as a unit from one end of the vessel to the other, means being provided to cause the unit to oscillate automatically between these positions. The pump 45 delivers into a passage 51 having a rectangular opening in contact with the perforated bottom 44.
