[Class 6 (i).] A harrow comprises a series of fixed tines and a series of tines mounted at short distances apart and moved in parallel lines across substantially the same strip of ground and transversely to the line of movement of the machine, so that in harrowing a field in one direction the same effect is obtained as if the field were harrowed with an ordinary harrow first in one direction and then in a direction transverse thereto. The rectangular frame 1 shown is mounted on two travelling wheels 2 each of which drives an inclined shaft 7 through the chain and bevel gearing shown. The parallel shafts 7 drive independent sets of parallel endless chains 10 bychain gearing 11, 12, 13. The chains 10 are carried by hexagonal chain wheels 16, 18 provided with guides and mounted on shafts 68, 14 supported in inclined frame bars 15. The lower parts of the chains run in channel-shaped guides. The wheels 2 are mounted in frames 36 which may be simultaneously raised between guides by screw mechanism driven by bevel and worm gearing from a shaft turned by a hand crank. By means of the same hand crank and similar screw mechanism castor wheels for transport purposes may be lowered as the wheels 2 are raised. Draught hooks may be provided at the end of the frame 1 so that it may be drawn endwise on the castor wheels. The tines 20, Fig. 5, may be fixed on the chain links 19, or pivoted on pins 40 and controlled by flat springs 41 bearing on projections 46, 47 and protected by guards 44. Ordinary fixed-tine harrows may be connected to the frame 1 by pivoted hooks engaging in holes 104 in the rear bar.
