Abstract
407,328. Refrigerators. HEYWOOD, F., Norton Hall, The Green, Norton-on-Tees, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. Sept. 13, 1932, No. 25477. [Class 29.] A refrigerating unit employing solid carbon dioxide and particularly adapted for large chambers such as vehicles comprises a container 3, Figs. 1 and 2, for the refrigerant 1, completely or partially surrounded by an outer casing 6 separated therefrom by spaces 4 through which air circulates by convection. The base of the refrigerant container is of metal, and the sides are insulated, and preferably the metal of the base is continued upwards as an outer covering 2 of the insulation, to minimise the amount of insulation required at those parts. The flow of air is controlled by regulated upper and lower openings 7, 5, the upper one comprising a hinged door urged to the open position by a counterweight 10 and adapted to be held down by the engagement of an arm 12 of a thermostat 13 with a lug 11 on the door. The lower regulation comprises sliding doors 8 and provides a rough control. The refrigerant is preferably of block form and rests directly on the metal base, and the evaporated gas may be led into the storage space or into the insulation, or be led outside. Another arrangement, Fig. 3, comprises a compartment in a van formed by insulated partitions 5, 6, the air passage being lined with metal and controlled by doors 4, 10. Charging doors 9 are provided for the container.
