Abstract
407,180. Loose - leaf binders. GILBERT, A., 101, Goswell Road, London. Feb. 21, 1933, No. 5357. [Class 146 (i).] A cover for a loose-leaf book comprises front and back cover pieces 1, 2 and a binding part 3, the cover pieces being provided with folded-in flaps 4 along one edge, which are secured to flaps 5 on the binding part by long strip-metal clamping means 7 of U- shaped cross - section, thus forming binding stubs for the loose leaves 8. The loose leaves 8 are bound by screws 9 and elongated nuts 11, which are housed in apertures 13, 14 respectively, in the two stubs. Each clamping- member 3 comprises a strip of metal with two sets of aligned holes, which is adapted to be folded over on itself so that the holes register with each other. The apertures in the outer limbs of the clamping-bars 7 are preferably large enough to pass the heads 10, 12 of the screws and nuts 9, 11, but those in the inner limbs of the members 7 are not. The heads 10, 12 are thus housed entirely within the stubs. The holes in the flaps 4, 5 are all preferably large enough to pass the heads 10, 12, as shown, but those in the flaps 5 may be smaller. The binding part may be wholly of metal, U-shaped in cross-section and with its edges folded over to form the clamping parts 7. Slack may be provided at 18 to allow for expansion ; in a modification the binding part may be in two halves, fitting one into the other so as to be extensible. The members 7 preferably do not extend quite to the end of the flaps 4, 5 and the corners of the flaps are cut off. The cover pieces and binding part are preferably made from a flexible material such as cardboard covered with imitation leather.
